【Healthkoreanews】The anti-cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil(Merck & Co) not only reduces men's risk of HPV(human papillomavirus), but it also is effective against genital warts, which can lead to cancer of the penis and anus.
The researchers looked at 4,065 males, ages 16 to 26, and found that those who had HPV in the blood and received the vaccine were 45% less likely to develop HPV and 90% genital warts.
Merck & Co. plans to submit an application form for the approval to sell Gardasil as a vaccine for males to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Now Gardasil is only approved in the United States to protect women against HPV, which can cause cervical cancer. Gardasil is approved for males in 40 countries.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease, HPV may be related to approximately 1,500 cases of penile cancer and about 1,900 cases of anal cancer in men a year.
The findings were presented on Nov. 16 at a meeting of the European Research Organization on Genital Infection and Neoplasia.<헬스코리아뉴스>
